State Quality Awards 2005
17.08.2005 Director General Riitta Kaivosoja from the Ministry of Education announced the State Quality Awards 2005 for films and visual programmes. The 14 awards amount up to 360.000 euros. The highest quality award, 65.000 euros, was given to The 3 Rooms of Melancholia (Melancholian 3 huonetta), produced by Kristiina Pervilä / Millennium Film Ltd. and directed by Pirjo Honkasalo.
Altogether 66 films or visual programmes applied for the quality awards. Selectable were such films or programmes that had had their public premiere in Finland between June 1, 2004 and May 31, 2005.
The State Quality Award is given to the producer as an acknowledgement for a meritorious film or visual programme. The Awards are given out by the National Council for Cinema.
The 3 Rooms of Melancholia (Melancholian 3 huonetta), 65 000 € Oy Millennium Film Ltd / Kristiina Pervilä, directed by Pirjo Honkasalo. "Uncompromising morals, patience and personal courage as an artist have accomplished a documentary film that other films will be compared to in the entire world for a long time."
Frozen Land (Paha maa), 60 000 € Solar Films Inc Oy / Markus Selin, directed by Aku Louhimies. "This tough, frantic depiction of our society has been realized by reaching daringly for new cinematic expression."
For the Living and the Dead (Eläville ja kuolleille), 50 000 € Sputnik Oy / Ilkka Mertsola, directed by Kari Paljakka. "A film with such a difficult theme that it first seems to be impossible. Touching for all, and doubtless of immense importance to those who are all too familiar with the theme."
Producing Adults (Lapsia ja aikuisia), 30 000 € Blind Spot Pictures Oy / Petri Jokiranta & Tero Kaukomaa, directed by Aleksi Salmenperä. "A serious basic theme and a humorous treatment add up to a fine whole."
Pelicanman (Pelikaanimies), 30 000 € Lumifilm Oy / Hanna Hemilä, directed by Liisa Helminen. "A good example of a film that will not become outdated for a long time but will see ever new audiences growing up."
Trench Road (Juoksuhaudantie), 20 000 € Kinotar Oy / Lasse Saarinen, directed by Veikko Aaltonen. "The battle of a Finnish man for his home and family has been told in a quirky but definitely pertinent way."
Once Upon a Time There Was a Utopia (Olipa kerran Utopia), 20 000 € Ilokuva, Naukkarinen & Co / Lasse Naukkarinen, directed by Lasse Naukkarinen. "A shamelessly personal documentary that expands into a description of an entire generation."
The Birthday (Syntymäpäivä), 20 000 € Kinoproduction Oy / Claes Olsson, directed by Kari Juusonen. "An animated short film that proves that, also in animation, it is not essential to use the latest techniques but to have an impressive idea and patience for a proper realization."
The Crawl (Krooli), 15 000 € MRP Matila Röhr Productions Oy / Marko Röhr, directed by PV Lehtinen. "A short film whose length matches its theme, accurately controlled in each cinematic sector."
Gourmet Club, 10 000 € Snapper Films Oy / Juha Wuolijoki, directed by Juha Wuolijoki. "A skillfully written and realized film, proven to be exportable."
About a Farm (Hiljainen tila), 10 000 € Klaffi Tuotannot Oy / Kimmo Paananen, Mika Ronkainen, directed by Mervi Junkkonen. "A film that finds a good balance between the familiarity of the film maker´s own life and a larger context. A valuable documentary about the state of change in our society."
The North Star (Kainuun tähti), 10 000 € Mandart Production / Pamela Mandart, directed by Erkko Lyytinen. "A documentary that reminds us about the different aspects of current reality and current industry in Finland."
The Bewitched Child (Lumottu lapsi / L´enfant et les sortileges), 10 000 € Kroma Productions Oy / Marikki Hakola, directed by Marikki Hakola. The film combines courageously new technology with the most traditional forms of art.
Optical Sound (Optinen ääni), 10 000 € Kinotar Oy / Lasse Saarinen, Cilla Werning, Ulla Simonen, directed by Mika Taanila. "The exceptional atmosphere of this short film can only be sensed in a movie theatre. The seemingly simple theme creates for a while its own versatile world."
